EPSI-C Electronic Psychiatric Semi-structured Interview for Children and Adolescents
What is EPSI-C?
EPSI-C is a semi-structured diagnostic interview for children and adolescents (ages 6–17) developed to support a broad, systematic, and standardized assessment of mental, behavioural, and neurodevelopmental disorders in accordance with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. The interview covers 21 DSM-5 diagnostic domains and includes structured suicide risk assessment.
EPSI-C was developed in collaboration between the Child- and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic and Centre for Clinical Research in Västmanland, Region Västmanland, Sweden.
How does the interview work?
EPSI-C is a modular instrument, where each module corresponds to a specific DSM-5 diagnostic domain. Each module begins with screening questions and continues with more detailed questions if the screening indicates relevant symptoms. Suggested questions are provided as a flexible support and may be adapted.
The interview should be conducted by clinicians with experience in psychiatric diagnostic assessment of children and adolescents. It can be administered with the child and parents/guardians together or separately. Final diagnostic conclusions are based on a synthesis of the information from the interview, alongside other relevant clinical and anamnestic data.
Purpose and format
EPSI-C aims to strengthen the quality of the diagnostic process, reduce the risk of missing important clinical information, and facilitate the detection of comorbidity. The instrument is platform-neutral and can be used in both digital and paper-based formats.
