Call for applications: Visiting PhD-student positions in Medical Humanities, Uppsala University
The Centre for Medical Humanities invites applications for visiting PhD-student positions for the autumn semester 2026 (August-January). We welcome doctoral students whose work engages with the interdisciplinary field of medical humanities and who wish to spend a period in our vibrant research environment dedicated to exploring the intersections of medicine, health, culture, and society. We offer an active community of researchers, activities and opportunities to develop new academic connections and collaborations.
About the Centre for Medical Humanities
The Centre for Medical Humanities (CMH) at Uppsala University is an interdisciplinary environment where scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and medical sciences work together to explore the cultural, ethical, social, and historical dimensions of medicine and health. We support research that connects biomedical questions with humanistic and societal perspectives. CMH currently hosts a PhD student programme, a seminar series and offers other academic and social activities throughout the year. During the autumn semester 2026, CMH also hosts an artist-in-residence-initiative and a medical humanities conference directed at young scholars.
What we offer
Two guest researcher stays of 2-6 months during the autumn semester 2026. We offer workspace and IT and library access, covered costs for travel to/from Uppsala and accommodation during the visit. For PhD students in other European countries connected to the Erasmus+ programme, there are opportunities for additional grants.
Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme, and conduct research relevant to the field of medical humanities, broadly defined. Priority will be given to candidates in the later stages of their project, and projects with a potential for synergy with ongoing work at CMH. Priority will also be given candidates aiming for longer visits, and to international candidates.
