Employment after 69 years of age
Employment
An individual can be employed after the age of 69 if the employer determines that it is desirable and well justified in the individual case based on the needs of the organisation, and if it is financially possible. This could be the case, for example, where there is a need for specific expertise, a need to bridge a specific period pending new recruitment, or when it is appropriate to employ someone who has obtained a research grant from an external funding body.
An assessment must always be made ahead of any decision to employ someone after the age of 69, with the aim of achieving a balance between benefiting from knowledge and experience on the one hand and the need for reorientation and innovation on the other hand. Parallel to this, the financial viability of continued employment must be assessed and ensured.
Such employment should not normally be full-time. Normally, the default position should be a maximum of 50 per cent of a full-time post. The period of employment should normally be limited to a maximum of two years. However, employment is to run for a maximum of one year at a time.
An individual who takes on an area of responsibility or performs duties of a more than marginal scope after retirement age (the age of 69), based on the needs of the department/the organisation, should normally be employed at the relevant percentage of a full-time position.
Other cases
A former employee, for example a professor, who personally wishes to continue to participate in scholarly activities can do so without being employed if the department considers it appropriate, as a professor emeritus/emerita.
Funding
The employment must be funded. The funding body that benefits from the employment should pay for it. The employment should normally not be funded using direct government funding for research and doctoral education, and should normally not involve management duties, though in exceptional cases this may be permitted.
Varbi guide for recruitments to teaching positions in TekNat
The quick guide for HR generalists on recruitments to teaching positions in the Faculty of Science and Technology (sharepoint) describes the various types of recruitments and appointments and the documents needed in different cases.
The manual only describes the steps that differ from the Varbi manual for HR generalists (sharepoint) Remember to always take out a registration number from W3D3 and link it to the matter in Varbi.
Decision-making authority
The authority to decide on employment depends partly on the type of position involved and partly on whether the person is employed for up to one year or longer than one year. Employment after the age of 69 is for no more than one year at a time. The sections below describe who has the authority to make decisions in each case.
