The 2024 HERO Lecture: Johan Heilbron “Rethinking the Internationalization of Higher Learning; On Patterns, Principles, and Policies“

Internationalization has become a defining feature of higher learning, whether we are concerned with teaching, research, publishing, or policy making. The leading approaches used to account for this process, however, have not truly kept up with the burgeoning historical and empirical research. Taking stock of a multitude of these inquiries, I will argue that, some of the central questions about internationalization need to be revised and reformulated. A corresponding theoretical model needs to move beyond the existing frameworks as well; in final part of the lecture, I will outline what such an alternative theoretical framework might look like.
