AI-policy for Individual courses in biology

All original text is expected to be written without the help of AI. The reason for this is that key learning outcomes for the courses are “On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • with correct language present the scientific compilation in writing (Literature project courses)
  • give a correct oral and written presentation of the work training period (Research training courses)
  • present the results in correct language, orally and in writing, in an appropriate form for the project (Project work courses)”

For this to be assessed, the original text must be the student's own, without the help of AI. Furthermore, generative AI such as ChatGPT cannot be cited as a source because the generated text is neither reliable nor possible to reproduce.

We would also like to emphasize the importance and value of conducting your own reading and writing for the courses and the final report. An independent literature review builds critical cognitive skills and deep learning and understanding, while independent writing develops your ability to communicate ideas and develop your own scientific voice. Delegating either task to AI will deny you the practice needed to build these valuable skills.

It is permitted to use AI to revise/improve an existing original text linguistically. We recommend that this is done after the entire original text is complete as we may request to see the original text.

It is permitted to use AI to generate figures of a general illustrative/schematic nature.

It is permitted to generate programming code. In this case, describe in the method section how it has been used and be sure to include references (https://libguides-en.ub.uu.se/harvard/generative-ai).

If a confidentiality agreement is in place, or if the work contains other sensitive information such as unpublished data, generative AI may only be used with the explicit approval of the supervisor. This is because any uploaded information may otherwise risk becoming publicly accessible and used beyond our control.

You must never use an AI tool to summarize or otherwise process another student's work. A student's work may be confidential or contain unpublished material that must not be shared with or processed by external AI services.

If generative AI has been used in any form, it must be clearly stated and explained (to what extent, where and how) in a paragraph before the references.

It is important to emphasize that it is the student who takes responsibility for the accuracy of the material in the report.
