person med vårdkläder undersöker ryggrad

Physiotherapy's most important area of knowledge is how physical activity and movement contribute to health and participation in everyday life and society. Our research is characterised by the integration of physiotherapy and behavioural medicine. We seek answers to whether it is possible to increase the effect of physiotherapeutic treatment methods by defining the goal of physiotherapeutic treatment interventions as health-related behaviours, and by applying behavioural theory and behavioural analysis in combination with medical and physiotherapeutic knowledge such as disease and exercise science.

Understanding how biological, psychological and social variables interact in the development of disease, as well as in recovery and rehabilitation, is central to the group's research, as well as how these are related to the ability to be physically active and cope with everyday activities including work. In the research, we use a variety of methods where randomised controlled trials and prospective cohort studies are combined with studies with a qualitative approach.
The research group is multidisciplinary and includes teachers, researchers and PhD students from Uppsala University, Uppsala University Hospital and the Centres for Clinical Research in Gävleborg and Dalarna. The research is conducted in the following research areas:

  • Physical exercise and rehabilitation in cancer
  • Cardiopulmonary health (the separate slide goes here)
  • Mental health of young people (UPIC)
  • Long-term pain (UPAIN)
  • Neurorehabilitation and fall prevention in the elderly
  • Animal physiotherapy
