Learning outcomes

After this course, students should be able to:

1. You should be able to communicate a scientific discovery to the press media and communicate with journalists.
2. You should be familiar and know hoe/when to use different communication tools such as podcasts, videos or artistic media to communicate science
3. You should be familiar with the techniques to outreach the young students, i.e. visits to schools, visits from schools, scientific fests
4. You should be minimally proficient in using social media (i.e. twitter, wikipedia) to disseminate science.
5. To Improve your skills present your scientific results using standard poster or presentation.

Learning outcomes for doctoral degree

As part of the required traning of a scientist, one should cultivate and know the tools to perform the third task in an academic carreer (outreach); technology companies also require this skill. The course provides for most the first approach to the third mandate of public researchers, i.e. after research and teaching, which is the need to communicate science to society (outreach). It is a comprehensive overview to the different domains of science communication, which the candidate to a doctoral degree should be familiar with, as well as resources and initial training on how to communicate science to society.

Course contents

1. Press coverage of scientific research
2. Visualization of science in effective ways.
3. Use of social media for scientific outreach
4. Communication skills of the scientist with the politician and other sectors of society
5. Interaction between Scientific research centers and schools
6. Oral presentation skills
7. Science podcast creation

Instruction

The course runs as a workshop, where the different areas of science communication are presented by one or two experts on the field, in the form of an introductory lecture followed by a hands on exercise. The lectures are usually informal and welcome participation in the forms of questions, project videos or show reali life examples illustrating the domain of communication covered, and the hands on exercises can be individual or group exercises. The course has different instructors that have been participating for many years, and we altogether create an atmosphere where participation and discussions are encouraged.

Assessment

Obligatory attendance, obligatory hand-in of the practical exercises when indicated.
