The Faculty of Theology

Two new professors will be inaugurated at the Faculty of Theology on 15 November.

Nils Billing, History of Religions

My research revolves around Ancient Egyptian burial literature, ritual and sacred architecture in the larger perspective of the history of religions. In my doctoral thesis in Egyptology, I investigated the development of a specific personification, the Egyptian goddess of the heavens Nut, where I showed how human thought on eternity and life after death constantly influenced and changed the way in which this great mother goddess was depicted in both text and iconography.

Later works, which also included a second thesis in the history of religion, have focused primarily on the interaction between grave architectures and their associated decoration programmes. In a number of case studies, I have shown how perpetual performative ritual spaces could be created beyond human involvement by the conscious placement of text and images, based on a particular architectural plan.

Other research includes a publication project of a collection of mummy bandages with the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead that is stored in Museum Gustavianum’s historical collections at Uppsala University. I have also published several books on ancient Egyptian architecture and religion, including translations of and commentaries on a number of funerary texts.

ogram.

Ulf Zackariasson, Philosophy of Religion

Philosophy of Religion studies and discusses people’s different approaches – secular as well as religious – to existential questions in the past and in our contemporary world. These include questions about our place in the world, the meaning of life, and the existence of God or some other higher power in some form.

My research, which is informed by both history of philosophy and contemporary society, is based on American pragmatism – a philosophical movement that emphasises that answers to our existential questions, our philosophies of life, both affect and are affected by our actions and have concrete consequences for how we live our lives.

In my work on important contemporary questions concerning criticism of religion, interreligious relations and the roles of philosophies of life in democratic societies, I seek to show how pragmatic reflection on the practical dimensions and consequences of philosophies of life contribute to a critical and constructive understanding and discussion of them and their roles in our lives and societies.
