Elena Namli

Biography

Elena Namli is Professor of Ethics at the Faculty of Theology at Uppsala University. Her research interests include ethical theory, political ethics and theological ethics.

Elena Namli's current book project is entitled Legal Positivism, Politics, and Critical Ethics. This book challenges the view that legal positivism should be reduced to a conceptual analysis of legal validity. Instead, the author reclaims legal positivism as a theory of the relationship between law, morality, and politics. Novel interpretations of the classical works of Herbert L A Hart, Joseph Raz, and Jürgen Habermas are offered in this book in order to frame legal positivism as a theory that makes possible a moral and political critique of valid law.

Elena Namli is one of the founders of a two-year Master’s Program in Human Rights (in Swedish) at the Faculty of Theology and currently teaches a course entitled Human Rights and Contemporary Racism . She teaches Ethics at the Faculty of Theology and supervises several doctoral dissertations (in Ethics).

Professor Namli is fluent in Russian, Swedish and English and has published work in all three languages. Among her publications are Human Rights as Ethics, Politics, and Law (2014), Future(s) of the Revolution and the Reformation (editor, 2019), Etik (Ethics, with Carl-Henric Grenholm, 2019). Elena Namli served as President of Societas Ethica from 2020 to 2024. She is Editor in Chief of De Ethica.
