Research

My project aims to study how coercion operated in practice on the agrarian labour market in Sweden between the mid-19th century and the 1920s. I show that many agricultural workers served under agreements that could not be terminated at will, and employers sought to have those agreements enforced against the workers. Just because an agreement to enter a contract was done voluntarily does not mean that labour was free. Coercion served three different purposes: to enforce contract fulfilment, to oppose workers' initiatives to organise, and to compel workers into obedience.
