Ranking: Uppsala University among the 100 best in the world

California Institute of Technology, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Princeton, and Cambridge top the ranking list. But three Swedish universities are among the top 100. Karolinska Institutet is in 32nd place, and Lund University in 80th. Uppsala University places 87th.

The 2011-12 Times Higher Education World University Rankings are based on 13 indicators divided into five categories:

• Teaching — the learning environment 30 %
• Research – volume, income, and reputation 30 %
• Citations - research influence 30 %
• "Industry income" - innovations 2.5 %
• International outlook — staff, students and research 7.5 %

“Rankings must always be taken with a pinch of salt and should probably be regarded as a sampling of quality. But we are gratified and proud, of course, to be among the 100 best universities in the world. This confirms that we maintain high quality in both education and research,” says Uppsala University Deputy Vice Chancellor Kerstin Sahlin.

Having a good reputation has become ever more important for success in the academic world. Being known as a university of high quality helps attract good students and researchers. Times Higher Education (THE) also provides a ranking based solely on the reputation a university has. The “Best Reputation” Ranking - Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2011 – is based on survey responses from over 10,000 experienced researchers in some 130 countries. Here Uppsala University places 70th. A new such ranking will be published in March 2012.
