Uppsala University places 60th in the 2014 Shanghai ranking

In this year’s Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), Uppsala University been ranked 60th among the world’s top universities, thereby improving its position by thirteen places. Uppsala University has also improved its score in specific scientific areas, and is now ranked among the top 200 in all areas.
Every year the Jiao Tong University in Shanghai ranks the world’s universities – the so-called Shanghai ranking. It is one of the more prestigious and talked about global university rankings. The top 500 out of the world’s more than 20,000 universities are listed.
Uppsala University is among the world’s top 100 universities, now ranked 60th – up 13 places from last year’s ranking of 73. It is primarily in the publishing indicators that Uppsala University has seen improvement, especially in highly cited papers, i.e. articles that are among the 10 per cent most cited in their scientific field.
Other indicators in publishing are number of articles indexed by Web of Science and articles in Nature and Science. Both have been improved, especially the former. This correlates with other bibliometric studies, showing that the number of papers produced per employee is high at Uppsala University.
The Shanghai ranking also includes a ranking in specific scientific areas. As in previous years, Uppsala University places among the top 100 in Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy.
Uppsala University displays an impressive breadth. For the first time in the ARWU’s history, Uppsala University is among the top 200 universities in all scientific areas. The improvement in Social Sciences has been especially notable, up from below 200 to the 101–150 group.
Harvard tops the Shanghai ranking for the twelfth year running, followed by Stanford and MIT. The US dominates the list with more than 50 universities among the top 100. Of the European countries, the UK leads with eight universities among the top 100, followed by Switzerland with five. Cambridge, in fifth place, is the highest-scoring European university.
Of the Swedish universities, Karolinska Institutet once again gets the best score. Uppsala University is in second place, and Stockholm University third. Lund and Gothenburg universities are, just like last year, placed in the 101–150 and the 151–200 groups respectively. (No individual positions are given below 100th place.)
