Exhibition: Andreas Vesalius and the Anatomical Renaissance
This year’s exhibition at Carolina Rediviva celebrates the quincentenary of Andreas Vesalius’s birth. The exhibition will be on display from May 22 2015 to April 30 2016.
Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564) is acknowledged as the founder of modern anatomy and his pioneering work De humani corporis fabrica libri septem (1543) is a milestone in medical history. Vesalius also made a significant contribution to the art of anatomical illustration. All his works on the subject are illustrated, and the pictures are often very well executed.
After the publication of Fabrica, illustrations became a natural feature of almost every anatomical atlas, his illustrations having paved the way for a new tradition in anatomical illustration, examples of which can be seen in the exhibition.
The exhibition is a co-operation between Hagströmerbiblioteket (Karolinska Institutet) and Uppsala University Library.
