Uppsala University advancing in latest world ranking

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2015-16 judges universities across 13 different performance indicators grouped into 5 areas of varying importance:

• Teaching – the learning environment 30%
• Research – volume, income and reputation 30%
• Citations – research influence 30%
• Industry Income – knowledge transfer 2.5%
• International outlook – staff, students and research 7.5%

This year, THE has doubled the amount of universities ranked by the list, which now encompasses 800 universities.

In THE’s latest world ranking, the California Institute of Technology takes first place, ahead of Oxford, Stanford, Cambridge, MIT and Harvard.

These three Swedish universities made the top 100:

• Karolinska Institutet: 28 (2014: 44)
• Uppsala University: 81 (2014: 98)
• Lund University: 90 (2014: 119)

‘For Uppsala University to make 81 in the world is an outstanding achievement to be celebrated’, comments Phil Baty, editor of THE World University Rankings. ‘Competition is stiff, and the results are trusted by students and their families as well as academics all over the world’.

‘Us climbing the rankings is a positive development’, says Anders Malmberg, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University. ‘The most important reason seems to be a significant improvement in the indicators of “citations” and “research”. It confirms that we are a strong research university from an international perspective, but as always, one should not read too much into short-term fluctuations in these rankings’.

THE World University Rankings also lists the world’s best universities in a variety of subjects. These rankings will be published later in October and November.
