The Faculty of Law has appointed two leading researchers, Professor Emeritus Markku Helin and Professor Emerita Adrienne Héritier, as new honorary doctors.

Markku Helin has worked at Helsinki University, the Academy of Finland and at Turku University, where he in 1989 was appointed Associate Professor of Private Law and in 1998 as Professor of Family and Inheritance Law. His research interests include general civil law, philosophy of law, jurisprudence, international family and inheritance law, critical analysis of supernorms and, most recently, analysis of the requirements of research ethics in jurisprudence. His research is characterised by a critical and analytical stance, great awareness of the importance of legal systematics and legal theory, and an ability to apply his insights directly in his own authorship and in his work as Counsellor of Legislation at the Finnish Ministry of Justice 1995–2011. As Counsellor of Legislation, Markku Helin had a great responsibility for – and large influence over – all legislation that was passed in Finland in the family and inheritance legal areas, including international family and inheritance legislation during this period.

Adrienne Héritier is Professor Emerita of Government, working at the European University Institute (Florence), the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods (Bonn), and Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (Rome). Her research focuses on European decision-making, theories about new forms of governance and regulation of markets. Adrienne Héritier has continuously cooperated across borders between different disciplines of social science and successfully gathered young researchers from many different countries in her projects. In this way she has brought an ideal to life. Adrienne Héritier was during 2015 employed at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Law, holding the Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professorship.
