Jane Reichel and Anna-Sara Lind investigate ethical reviews when using personal data in research

Last summer, the government took the decision to commission a Research Data Inquiry, which will review the regulations regarding the processing of personal data for research purposes. One part of the inquiry concerns the ethical review procedure and Jane Reichel, Professor of Administrative Law, and Anna-Sara Lind, Associate Professor of Public Law, specialise in this issue.
In spring 2016, the EU adopted a Data Protection Regulation, which is a new regulation regarding the processing of personal data in the union. The data protection inquiry in Sweden has been tasked with proposing adaptations and additional legislative regulations at the general Swedish level.
A special Research Data Inquiry will now propose an additional regulation concerning the processing of personal data for research purposes. The aim is for the regulation to allow for adequate processing of personal data for research purposes while protecting the freedoms and rights of individuals.
The Research Data Inquiry is responsible for reviewing several components, including the ethical review procedure, the National Board of Forensic Medicine’s registry regulations and the biobank registry.
The Inquiry will present some of its findings on 1 June 2017 and a full report by 8 December 2017.
