Daniel Hartman – new scholarship holder in Hong Kong

Daniel Hartman has just received his Bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Uppsala University and landed in Hong Kong on 9 January.

“It feels great. I have been looking forward to this very much. It seems like a fun job and I look forward to meeting a lot of people,” says Daniel Hartman over the phone.

The internship which he will take over from Jesper Karlsson involves 75 per cent work for the chamber of commerce and 25 per cent work for Uppsala University’s alumni chapter in Hong Kong.

In what way will you be helping Uppsala’s alumni and alumni activities?
“The basic purpose of having us on location is to develop the existing alumni activities. To build working contact networks. There must be a sense of belonging to Uppsala University. The goal is for the chapter to become the obvious community for those who have studied at the University. I believe the key is to strive for a breadth in the events we arrange and really listen to what the alumni want.

Why did you apply for the scholarship?
“I have always been very interested in China, or this part of Asia. Most likely that is partly because my grandfather lived and worked here. I have long looked at similar opportunities around the world, but haven’t wanted to take a break from my studies before. Now as got close to finishing my degree it felt obvious that I should apply.”

Daniel Hartman says he looks forward to experiencing the Hong Kong culture more fully than just being there on holiday.

“A majority of all large companies in the world are here and have their large regional offices here. It’s an impressive metropolis. It is actually quite a small city that has gigantic business opportunities.

Daniel’s main responsibility at the chamber of commerce is to be “Young Professionals Coordinator”.

“I handle the category of members who are under 35 and it is simply about creating events of value to this member group. Right now my focus is on planning the year ahead. Which events should we host? Should they be social activities or more inspirational meetings with a focus on career?

Do you have any plans for the future, after your internship?
“Well, now I’ll be here for a year and will give it my all, and then we’ll see. I’m pondering whether to study for a Master’s or to look for a job. Hopefully I will connect with some useful contacts here before going home.”
