Uppsala has kept its place among the top 100 in the latest ranking of the world’s best universities. In the 2017 ranking from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Uppsala University comes in at number 63 and is one of three Swedish higher education institutions in the top 100.

Every year Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks the world’s universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), generally referred to as the ‘Shanghai Ranking’. This is one of the most talked-about global rankings of universities. The list, which covers the top 500 of the world’s more than 20,000 universities, is based on six different indicators, including number of articles in the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index, and number of staff winning Nobel Prizes.

There are few changes compared with last year’s list. Uppsala University is again in the top 100, coming in at number 63 this year. Last year Uppsala University was in 60th place.

“The Shanghai Ranking is a prestigious ranking and it is pleasing that we have kept our prominent place in the list,” says Deputy Vice-Chancellor Anders Malmberg.

Two other Swedish higher education institutions also make the top 100 this year: Karolinska Institute (number 44) and Stockholm University (number 74).

As in previous years, the United States dominates the list, with Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Berkeley the leaders among the 16 US universities ranked in the top 20. The other four are Cambridge, Oxford, University College London and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.
