Four top researchers at Uppsala University win ERC Starting Grants

The European Research Council (ERC) has now announced which researchers have been awarded ERC Starting Grants in the 2018 call. A total of EUR 603 million will be shared out among 403 research projects across the EU. Four of the 17 projects funded at Swedish higher education institutions go to researchers who will be working at Uppsala University.
ERC Starting Grants are for researchers at the beginning of their career (2–7 years after completing their PhD) who want to establish themselves as research leaders in Europe.
A total of 3,170 applications came in this year and more than 400 researchers in 22 countries have been awarded funding of up to EUR 1.5 million each for their projects. ERC Starting Grants are awarded in three domains: Life Sciences, Physical and Engineering Sciences, and Social Sciences and Humanities.
The following researchers have received funding for projects to be carried out at Uppsala University:
Tove Fall, Department of Medical Sciences, for the project GUTSY – The gut microbiota and its systemic effects on metabolism and atherosclerotic disease.
Oskar Karlsson, Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, for the project PATER – Paternal Epigenetic Inheritance: A man’s life experiences may impact health of his unborn children and grandchildren.
Sanna Koskiniemi, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, for the project Growth regulation –The wide-spread bacterial toxin delivery systems and their role in multicellularity.
Oliver Schlotterer, currently at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, Potsdam, Germany, for the project UNISCAMP – The unity of scattering amplitudes: gauge theory, gravity, strings and number theory. He will be moving to the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University in conjunction with the European Research Council grant.
