Uppsala University ranked 87th in new world ranking

Uppsala University maintains its position on the top 100 list when Times Higher Education (THE) ranks the world’s best universities 2019. This year, Uppsala University places 87th among 1,200 universities across the world.


Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2019 is based on 13 different indicators in five categories which are weighted as follows:

  • Teaching (the learning environment) 30%
  • Research (volume, income and reputation) 30%
  • Citations (research influence) 30%
  • Industry income (knowledge transfer) 2.5%
  • International outlook (staff, students and research) 7.5%

This year, Times Higher Education ranks a total of 1,200 universities around the world. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge take the top two positions.

The US still dominates the ranking with seven universities in the top 10 and 41 universities in the top 100. Competition is increasing primarily from universities in Asia, with China as the country with the greatest number of ranked universities – 72. 12 Asian universities are now among the top 100.

Sweden has three universities in the top 100. Numbers below show this year’s placing with last year’s rank in brackets.

  • Karolinska Institutet – ranking: 40 (38)
  • Uppsala University – ranking: 87 (86)
  • Lund University – ranking: 98 (93)

The only other Nordic university in the top 100 is Helsinki University in 99th place.

The ranking scores are calculated as z-scores, giving the top-scoring university for each indicator a score of 100, with all other scores reflecting the distance from the best value.
