New sustainability graduate school at Campus Gotland
Uppsala University’s new multidisciplinary graduate school in sustainable development will start up in January 2021, The graduate school will be located at Campus Gotland and twelve doctoral students will be employed to work in its projects.
Campus Gotland is one of the focal points of Uppsala University’s sustainability efforts. It already has many research projects and other activities running there with this specialisation. In addition, the University will soon be starting up a graduate school in sustainable development, which is to be multidisciplinary, with projects emanating from local conditions.
- This multidisciplinary graduate school is the largest and single most important initiative that the University is taking to develop its research activities at Campus Gotland. Through the graduate school, we will be strengthening research into our profile area sustainability as we teach Campus Gotland’s next generation of researchers,” says Olle Jansson, Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University, Campus Gotland.
Eight of the University’s departments will be working together in five unique research projects. The twelve new doctoral students will work with their supervisors, international partners, visiting researchers and local actors in these projects, with a special focus on developing knowledge that can assist with the transitioning needed to live well in a world of changed climates.
The five projects are:
- Sustainable destination development. Three doctoral students
- Gotland’s sustainable energy system transition: resources, demand and planning. Three doctoral students
- Fisheries and coastal development in a small island context – the past, present and future. Two doctoral students
- Getting the balance right - Applying legislation when seeking a balance between energy transition and the conservation of cultural values. Two doctoral students
- Digital innovation for sustainable consumption. Two doctoral students
The twelve positions will be advertised now with a deadline of 15 September for applications. Jenny Helin, Senior Lecturer in Business Administration and currently working at Campus Gotland, will be the director of the new graduate school.
- My goal is that the graduate school will conduct research at the highest international level based on research questions that have strong local relevance. I also want us not only to study sustainability, but also to have a sustainable way of working, to practise what we preach,” says Jenny Helin.
