Peter Wallensteen, Professor Emeritus at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, has been awarded the Founders’ Medal of the University of North Texas Peace Science Society (International). The medal is awarded every four years and recognises sustained, lifelong contributions to peace and conflict research.

The Peace Science Society is an independent, non-profit organisation supervised by a council of officers elected from and by the membership. The citation for this year’s Founders’ Medal honouring Peter Wallensteen for his work in peace and conflict research states:

“Peter’s contributions and impact are multifaceted. He was the founder and director of the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), which is a seminal contribution to the quantitative study of conflict processes that continues to produce novel data and forms the base of numerous other conflict data projects. His highly regarded scholarship spans a number of areas in conflict studies, including conflict analysis, conflict prevention, conflict resolution, sanctions, peacebuilding, the UN system and regional organizations. His work has had direct impacts on real world peace building through the United Nations and other organizations. Peter has also been a critical mentor for others in the field, both at his own institutions and beyond.”
