Young people’s mental (ill-)health receives a lot of attention in the media and in public debate. How does the heated tone of public discourse affect young people’s wellbeing and what needs to be done to bring about change and reverse the trend? This is the theme of one of the seminars organised by Uppsala University at Almedalen.

Pernilla Åsenlöf, Professor of Physiotherapy at Uppsala University, will participate in the seminar, together with Rickard Bracken, Secretary General of Mind, and Petra Noreback (Christian Democrats), State Secretary at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.

“We want to highlight the great societal challenge posed by young people’s mental health. Or rather, their mental ill-health. Young women between the ages of 15 and 29 in particular are increasingly reporting worry and anxiety. We particularly want to emphasise the need to learn from the research when trying to understand what measures are required,” says Åsenlöf.

The seminar is a collaboration between Uppsala University’s research programmes UPIC (Young People’s Mental Health in Focus) and WOMHER (Uppsala University’s Centre for Women’s Mental Health) and the non-profit association Mind. A key issue is how different actors need to collaborate to direct their focus and resources correctly so as to promote mental health in the young generation. The seminar will be moderated by Ida Höckerstrand and Sofie Hallberg, creators of Ångestpodden (the Anxiety Podcast) – “Sweden’s biggest podcast on anxiety, mental ill-health and life’s irritations”.
