The Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture is an annual event. It is held in memory of Dag Hammarskjöld (1905–1961) and the values for which he stood in his endeavours: compassion, humanism, and international solidarity and cooperation. Hammarskjöld studied history, economics and law at Uppsala University, obtaining a doctorate in economics in 1934. He was appointed the second Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1953 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961 for his contributions to peacekeeping within the UN.
