Neil Price, Professor at the Department of Archaeology, Ancient History and Conservation, awarded the Torgny Segerstedt Medal for 2026. Through his ability to lead scholarly projects and communicate pioneering research findings to the wider public, he has created a research environment with the highest international reputation.
The Torgny Segerstedt Medal was instituted in honour of Torgny Segerstedt for his contributions as Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University over a period of 23 years. It has been awarded every two years since 1988 to “Swedish scholars for especially meritorious work in the arts and social sciences”.
This year, Neil Price, Professor at the Department of Archaeology, Ancient History and Conservation, will receive this award. From the award citation: “Professor Neil Price conducts archaeological research that is both global and multidisciplinary. His current research aims to explore how big the world of the Vikings was, in particular through the Vikings’ connections to regions in Asia. Through his ability to lead scholarly projects and communicate innovative research findings to the wider public, Neil Price has created a research environment with the highest international reputation.
In addition to the medal, he will receive a prize sum of SEK 200,000.
The Torgny Segerstedt Medal is awarded to the recipient during the University’s anniversary celebrations on 7 October.

The Torgny Segerstedt Medal
- The medal was instituted in honour of Torgny Segerstedt for his contributions as Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University over a period of 23 years and awarded for the first time in 1988. It is awarded every two years to “Swedish scholars for especially meritorious work in the arts and social sciences”.
- The recipient of the medal is selected by a committee consisting of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, acting as chair, and the deans of the Faculties of Theology, Law, Social Sciences, Arts, and Languages.
- The medal is handed to the recipient in connection with the University’s anniversary celebrations in October.
