Swedish Institute of Space Physics
The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) is a state research institute that conducts basic research and postgraduate education in space physics, atmospheric physics and space technology. IRF operates in Kiruna, Umeå, Uppsala and Lund, with its head office in Kiruna.
IRF Uppsala carries out research on space and its impact on Earth. It is integrated with the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University and located at the Ångström Laboratory.
The research focuses on space plasma physics and the interaction between the Sun and the Earth, such as space weather, magnetic fields and the Northern Lights. Measurements are made using instruments on satellites, space probes and ground-based systems, and are supplemented by computer models and theory.
IRF also develops advanced measuring instruments for international space projects and contributes to education at all levels. IRF’s research enhances our knowledge of processes in space and supports technological development that benefits society.
