SWERIK

SWERIK is a local research infrastructure at Uppsala University that makes digital research resources on the Swedish Riksdag available and further develops them, covering the period from 1867 to the present. The infrastructure brings together, structures and links central parliamentary documents, including parliamentary records, private members’ motions, government bills and committee reports. Together, these sources provide rich material for research on political culture, democratic development, social change and the history of Swedish legislative work.

The aim of SWERIK is to create a coherent ecosystem of linked open data that enables new ways of analysing Swedish parliamentary material. Through metadata, structured corpora, and links among documents, members of parliament, parties, committees, and parliamentary speeches, researchers can work with the material both qualitatively and quantitatively in ways that have previously been difficult to achieve at scale. The infrastructure is particularly relevant for research in digital humanities, social sciences, political science, history, statistics, law, language technology and text analysis.

SWERIK is developed through collaboration between the humanities, social sciences, statistics and the Riksdag Library. The infrastructure also contributes to open user interfaces and data resources that can be used by researchers, journalists, students and the wider public. Through connections to resources such as Wikidata/Wikipedia and international standards for parliamentary data, SWERIK helps make knowledge about the Swedish Riksdag, its members, debates and democratic decisions more accessible, reusable and comparable over time.
