About the course

Ireland has the oldest and most extensive vernacular literature in Western Europe. Wales also possesses a rich body of medieval literature. This course will give you an overview of and insight into the literature of these Celtic countries by reading texts in translation. Among other things, you will discover how the greatest hero of Irish tradition, Cú Chulainn, came to kill his only son and how the beautiful, but tragic, heroine Deirdriu killed herself after the murder of her lover Noísiu.

Outline for distance course: The distance course is based on self-study and communication through the web-based learning environment, which contains all information regarding the course and course activities. Teaching takes the form of pre-recorded lectures, assigned readings, exercises, and discussions. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required to follow the course since all teaching and examinations are done online. Taking a distance course means that you yourself largely determine when you study since you are not as tied to scheduled classes. Note, however, that this kind of course requires as much effort as an ordinary campus course and that it is equally important to meet set deadlines.
