About the course
This survey course traces the development of Irish-language poetry during the twentieth-century, from the foundation of the Gaelic Revival movement in 1893 to the digital age. All texts are read in English translation, alongside the Irish-language original. The course examines a number of themes in the development of Irish-language poetry in the twentieth century: Irish identity; the Irish-language question; modernity and urbanisation; social and political engagement; the feminine voice. The influence of the native Gaelic literary tradition and of European and world literatures on this poetry is also considered.
