Insurance for exchange students
On this page, you find information about what insurance you get automatically by being an exchange student at Uppsala University and input on what extra insurance you might need to organise privately before arriving in Sweden.
It is crucial that you have full insurance coverage when abroad. Your insurance should cover you both during school hours and your free time. If not, accidents or simply falling ill can become very expensive.
Insurance for exchange students
International exchange students who are at Uppsala University through a formal exchange agreement are covered by the insurance Student IN provided by Kammarkollegiet.
The insurance policy covers accidents, sickness, dental care, emergency home transportation, liability, legal rights, and property. It applies at all hours of the day, all days of the week.
However, conditions apply, e.g., the insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. You might, therefore, still need additional insurance.
The insurance provider for students at Uppsala University is Kammarkollegiet (Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency), a state authority under the Ministry of Finance. Please visit their website for insurance details, e.g., the insurance policy, terms and conditions, and the claim form.
Filling a claim
If you have an expense covered by the insurance, e.g., receiving treatment at a health centre, please note that they cannot send the bill directly to Kammarkollegiet. Instead, you are required to:
- first, pay the bill yourself; make sure to request a receipt or an invoice ...
- .. and then claim the insurance.
To claim the insurance:
- If your contact is located at the department where you are studying, contact them for directions on how to make the claim.
- If your contact is located at the Unit for International Mobility, you should submit the claim form, along with original receipts, to the University Service Centre at the Segerstedt Building, Dag Hammarskjölds väg 7, or per e-mail to mobility@uu.se.
Insurance certificate
Kammarkollegiet does not provide an insurance card. However, students can obtain an insurance certificate from their exchange coordinator at the university.
Period of coverage
The insurance provided by the university is valid from two weeks before the start of the official semester at Uppsala University until two weeks after the semester has officially ended.
The Swedish Migration Agency's requirements
The Student IN insurance provided by Uppsala University fulfils the requirements of the Swedish Migration Agency.
Students in university-wide exchange agreements will have the information required by the Swedish Migration Agency included in the Certificate of Acceptance.
Students in departmental and faculty exchange agreements should contact the department or faculty coordinator for information on insurance.
The European Health Insurance Card
Students who are residents of an EU Member State and covered by the state social security scheme in that country should bring their European Health Insurance Card for medical insurance.
Additional insurance you might need to arrange privately
As you can see in the Student IN insurance terms and conditions apply. The insurance does, for example, not cover any pre-existing medical conditions.
It is important that you read the terms and conditions of the insurance.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition or in other ways, deem the insurance insufficient for your personal needs, we strongly recommend that you take out additional insurance to meet your needs.
