Name: Jonatan Österberg
Through applied projects, students deepen their knowledge of level design and develop the ability to create more complex game environments.
Why are you launching the Bachelor’s programme in Game Design and Level Design?
– The launch of the programme gives us the opportunity to offer an education that is in high demand. In addition, the competences of the level design students will integrate very well with the games developed in collaboration with other students in our programmes.
What is level design?
– Level design involves the creation of the interactive environments that form the foundation of most games. These environments are referred to as levels within the industry. Designing levels is a multifaceted process that requires knowledge and skills from several perspectives. Level design includes storytelling, pedagogy, challenge design, and ensuring that the game’s mechanics are used in the best possible way. This means that a level designer has a significant influence on the final game experience.
What do students learn in the programme?
– During the programme, students learn to use various tools for game development. They also study interdisciplinary areas such as architectural history, sound design, and interactive storytelling as part of the work of developing game environments. The programme also includes components aimed at strengthening communication and collaboration skills. Students are trained to express themselves orally, in writing, visually, and through the game medium, as well as to work efficiently in groups.
What might a typical day look like for a student in the programme?
– A typical day for a student in the programme can vary depending on where they are in their studies. Generally, lectures covering theoretical components are combined with assignment-based work, carried out either independently or in collaboration with other students.
What careers does the programme lead to?
– Beyond the role of level designer, students who complete the programme will have solid knowledge of several parts of the development process. This prepares them to work in various types of productions, where roles may vary and are not solely focused on level design. After graduation, students will also have skills in areas such as storytelling, scripting, lighting, and sound design—competences that are in demand in the game industry.
What do you think about the future prospects for graduates?
– Most game projects require one or more level designers, which makes the role highly sought after in a game industry that is continuously growing in Sweden and has an ongoing need for skilled professionals.
What advice would you give to people considering applying to this programme?
– Level design is relatively accessible, as many games offer tools that allow you to create your own levels without extensive prior knowledge. This makes it possible to try level design and see whether it is something you want to pursue further.
