The programme is really well designed and gives everyone the chance to explore different areas of biology, so you can eventually discover what you’re most interested in.

How did you choose your programme?
– I chose this Master’s because I wanted to keep building on what I learned in biotech and focus on things I’m genuinely interested in. During my bachelor’s, I got really into immunology and microbiology, so this felt like the right direction. I also liked that Uppsala gives a lot of hands-on research opportunities and international exposure.

What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– The best thing about studying at Uppsala is that you get a lot of freedom to choose courses each semester, which lets you explore different areas of biology. There are also many opportunities for research training and individual projects, so you can gain hands-on experience in areas that really interest you. I think that combination is exactly what a biology student needs, and it’s really exciting.

Was there anything you found difficult or surprising when you started your studies at Uppsala University?
– One thing I found surprising when I started at Uppsala is that master’s students sometimes get the chance to help out in teaching labs, which isn’t very common in India. I think it’s really great because, with proper training, students can help others relate to the material and understand it better. On top of that, you even get paid for it, which is a nice bonus.

Describe the student life!
– I’d say student life here is really balanced. The pace of study is intense, but not so much that you can’t have a life outside of classes. Since the university is very multicultural, it’s great to be part of different celebrations and spend time with people from all over. And of course, student nations are a big part of life here, you can’t really ignore them!

Name three things you are doing this week
– This week I’m mainly working in the lab since I’ve started my master’s thesis. With Halloween coming up, there’s also a Halloween movie night at the department, which should be fun. And I’ll be going out with friends to a gasque at the student nations, where we get to dress up for Halloween.

What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– I came to Uppsala University with one main goal: to get into a PhD programme after my master’s, and that’s what I’m focused on right now. Since I’m doing a 45-credit thesis, my aim is to gain enough research experience and skills to be competitive for a PhD position. Everything I’m doing now is really geared toward that next step in my academic journey.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this programme?
– My advice would be to go for it! The programme is really well designed and gives everyone the chance to explore different areas of biology, so you can eventually discover what you’re most interested in. I’d also say to take advantage of the research opportunities and labs, because that’s where you really get to learn and grow.

What is your favourite place in Uppsala?
– Since I spend most of my time at EBC (Evolutionary Biology Centre) in Uppsala, my favorite place to take a break is the Botaniska trädgården (Botanical Garden). It’s a great spot to get some fresh air and relax for a bit, even when I just want to step away from the lab.

Where is the best place to study?
– My favorite place to study in Uppsala is Carolina Rediviva. It’s quiet, spacious, and really inspiring, which makes it easy to focus, especially when I need to dive into literature or get some serious reading done.

Do you have any final reflections or comments?
– Uppsala has been such an awesome experience — between cool research projects, friendly people, and the student nations, there’s always something happening. Honestly, it’s the kind of place where you can get your work done and still have a ton of fun!
