How did you choose your programme?
– I chose my program because it perfectly combines my passions for creativity, logic, and technology. Studying computer engineering strengthened my foundation in data, programming, and AI, and I became particularly drawn to how data science and machine learning can make technology smarter and more impactful.
What is it like to be an international student?
– I feel like it’s such a cool experience. I like how the classes are super interactive and well-structured. You get to meet people from all over the world, and the student nations make it easy to find friends and have fun doing different activities. I love how there are many educational events throughout the year, like webinars, hackathons, etc. Uppsala has this mix of calm and excitement, where you always feel welcome because people are genuinely nice. This makes studying here feel less hectic and more balanced.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– It has to be how the whole city just feels like one big campus. Everyone says it, and it’s true. Uppsala is basically a university town with little city vibes sprinkled in. There are also many educational events, workshops, and guest lectures happening all the time, so you always have a chance to learn something new outside of class.
Do you remember your first impression of Uppsala? Please tell us!
– When I first arrived in Uppsala, it was a sunny day, though it had rained a little while I was in the car from the airport to my new home. The city immediately caught my eye. The sky looked like it came straight out of a painting, and everything around felt so peaceful. Collecting my keys and welcome package didn’t take long, and I was amazed by how beautiful the campus was. I was excited to explore the city, and that same day I went to the main university building and the nearby church. Everywhere I looked, there were little scenes that just made the city feel so charming. If I could, I would love to relive that day as it was full of joy and excitement.
Name three things you are doing this week!
– I will be studying for my final examination, going to a campfire with my friends and going grocery shopping!
What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– For me, studying isn’t just about getting a degree, it’s about truly understanding things and growing as a person. I’ve always wanted to learn deeply, not just memorise or follow what others do. I’ve always believed that knowledge is power; it gives me a sense of independence and confidence. It’s one of those things in life that’s genuinely worth having.
– My goal is to become skilled and independent in the field of AI and data science, to be able to think critically, build meaningful projects, and solve real-world problems. I want to reach a point where I can create something impactful and innovative, something that actually makes a difference.
Describe the student life!
– Student life in Uppsala is truly a wonderful experience overall. There are so many events organised here that make social life vibrant and exciting. My best experience so far has definitely been getting a chance to see the northern lights with my classmates. They’re such amazing people. We often go out together on weekends for different activities like campfires, exploring the city, or playing board games.
Was there anything you found difficult or surprising when you started your studies at Uppsala University?
– My first week in Uppsala was an experience of wonderful discoveries and quick adjustments. While the cold took some getting used to, I was more surprised by how long the days were, with the sky remaining bright as late as 9 p.m. An even more beautiful surprise was learning that the Northern Lights or Aurora Lights are a common sight here, especially in October, sometimes appearing in stunning shades of green and red near the church. I was amazed by how well designed every program structure is here at Uppsala University, where every course is thoughtfully designed and perfectly organised to meet the program's needs.

What is your favourite place in Uppsala?
– It has to be the student nations.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
– As a senior data analytic at a reputed company who can design and manage efficient data systems.
Where is the best place to study?
– I usually study in my studio apartment because I find it easy to concentrate here but there are multiple libraries across the city of Uppsala. My favourite has to be the Ångström laboratory campus and the Ekonomikum Library of Uppsala University.
Do you have any final reflections or comments?
– Studying in an abroad country has its own challenges but it is exciting like adapting to a new culture, language barriers, and being away from family. Over time, I learned to stay open-minded, seek support from friends and university resources, and embrace new experiences. The key is to try to keep things simple. With time, everything becomes easier, making the whole experience very exciting.

How did you choose your programme?
– I can learn a variety of technical tools including programming languages, data visualisation tools, machine learning algorithms, etc. By studying Data Science, I can gain in-depth expertise and skills in data analysis, machine learning, and statistical modeling. I think it's cool to study cutting-edge technology.
What is it like to be an international student?
– As an international student, I think Uppsala offers a great Master's programme that provides a friendlier learning environment for me.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– The value of collaboration and practice is highly emphasised at Uppsala University. This philosophy has been exemplified in my courses this semester, which have placed a high demand on cooperation and practice, providing us with rich and in-depth learning experiences. This kind of hands-on approach helps develop teamwork and communication skills.
Do you remember your first impression of Uppsala?
– As soon as I arrived in Uppsala, I felt that I was far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a great atmosphere for learning, with libraries, research centres and academic institutions scattered throughout Uppsala, creating a great environment for learning.
What is your best experience so far, and how is the student life?
– The variability of the weather is a major feature in Sweden. But winter is cold with short daylight hours. However, what excites me is that I can enjoy the amazing aurora lights.
– Besides studying, I like to go to Kalmar nation to work or to spend unforgettable time with friends. The nations at Uppsala University are a kind of very old student society with houses, bars, events, and a lot of fun. Moreover, there I can meet Uppsala University students from all over the world and I enjoy talking to them very much.

- Participate in a lab in Statistics and Machine Learning
- Discuss the Introduction to Data Science group assignment with my classmates.

– Campus Angstrom offers a wealth of public study spaces, including quiet libraries and more open public study areas for students to discuss.

How did you choose your programme?
– Mathematics has always been my favourite subject. After finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering, I did an internship at a software development farm. If I chose to study data science, then I could use my programming skills and also study math.
What is it like to be an international student?
– My dream is to explore the world and that's why I choose to study abroad. It feels amazing to see a new environment, new culture and its history. At Uppsala University, there are so many international students. We learn about each other and teach others our culture and fascinate them to talk about our history. But at the same time, I miss my family and friends.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– One of the best things is that everyone is so helpful. When I moved here, I lost myself in this new place, I was devastated. Then I talked to my advisor about my situation and he helped me a lot. Another thing is that they are so organised about the courses and preparing students for their studies and career. There are several course administrators who are trying to help the students with their studies.
– I am also getting experience from Uppsala University as an international ambassador. It is one of my best experiences as a student so far.
Name three things you are doing this week!
– I am finishing my project. I am planning to visit my friend in Norway. I am preparing myself for summer internship.
What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– After finishing my Bachelor’s, I had two options. Either I had to join a company or do a Master’s. I decided to do my Master’s first, because I wanted to do something in studies. I think I made the best decision to come here.
– I have not planned my future yet. I am trying to focus on my Master’s. Besides that, I am trying to get an internship to get workplace experience. After that, I will decide whether I should try for a PhD or work.

Diego Pizarro, student from Peru

How did you choose your programme?
– I wanted to study in a Nordic country because they have a great balance between student life and social life. I chose Sweden because when I came here for vacations three years ago, I fell in love with the landscape, the people and the culture. I chose data science because I have been working in that industry for the last couple of years and Uppsala University because I had heard amazing things about its student life.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– The international environment is amazing! You always meet new people from different cultures and backgrounds and learn from them. This contributes to have a wider view of things and also pushes me to always to better.
Was there anything you found difficult or surprising when you started your studies at Uppsala University?
– I found it challenging and unexpected that classes don’t occur at the same time or day each week. However, this strengthened my planning and self-organisation. I’ve now adapted well.
Describe the student life!
– The student life in Uppsala is unmatched and very well balanced. You will have very engaging classes in the day and at night, you will hang out in any of the dozens of places in Uppsala such as bars, cafes, forest, parks, anywhere!
Name three things you are doing this week
– I’m crafting my Halloween costume. Then in the weekend I’m going for ice hockey and also playing Catan with some friends.
What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– My goal is to make the most of the student life during my Master’s. While it would be properly studying, making friends, finding an internship, I will make sure it is an amazing experience I can later share with all the people I meet along the way.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for this programme?
– Go for it! The Master's in data science, machine learning and stastistics, offers a strong, engaging syllabus and supportive faculty. You will feel that your professors’ goal is that you success in their courses!
What is your favourite place in Uppsala?
– My favourite place is Ruddammsdalens Odlarförening. It has a wide open natural view surrounded by small gardens. I go there evey time there’s sunbright!
Where is the best place to study?
– It’s definitely the floor 4 and above of house 10 of campus Ångströmlaboratoriet. It’s pretty quiet and it has a beautifiel view of Kronparkens naturreservat. Also, there are vending machines where you can get some snacks to fuel your study!
Do you have any final reflections or comments?
– I came for technical depth and found a community. The workload was real, but so were the results. I’m excited to apply these skills and keep learning.
