Learning outcomes
The course explores and analyses interactions between surfaces and molecules/biomolecules in a biological perspective and with a biological purpose.
At the end of the course the student should:
- have knowledge about biomolecular-surface interactions and analysis.
- know the pricipal methods for performing surface modifications of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials.
- understand and be able to design methods for selective biomolecule attachment to surfaces.
- be familiar with surface analytical techniques.
- have a good understanding of surface bioactivity and the principal processes that lead to inactivity.
- understand biofouling and princples for implant and biomaterial failure.
Content
Introduction to surface physics and biomaterials. Methods for surface derivatisation and surface characterisation. Methods for studies of biomolecular surface interactions. Theory for biomolecular surface interactions and applications in Bioseparation, Diagnostics, Drug Delivery and Bioimplants. During the course opportunities are given for spoken and written reports.
Instruction
Lecturers, seminars, demonstration laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination during the course or at the end of the course. Written examination 6 credits, laboratory work 1.5 credits.
