Learning outcomes

The ambition with the course is to give overview and insight in modern management control, a topic which is highly connected to the use of new information technology. New techniques create new possibilities for the ways work is organised and conducted, but it also implies new demands on control philosophy and methods (e.g. measurements). One important and specific ambition with the course is to give an understanding in which ways integrated enterprise solutions ("Enterprise Resource Planning Systems"), including CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and Supply Chain-systems supports or restricts an effective management control. This and other topics are discussed in an organisational context.

After the course the student will be able to orally as well as in writing discuss the topic by covering the following matters:

- explain why integrated systems are important in modern management accounting and control

- describe the history and discuss the future of integrated systems

- Understand the logic of the interplay between IT, organisation and management accounting and control.

- Understand the logic and importance of process orientation.

- analyse and evaluate a practical situation regarding IT, and management accounting and control.

- Practice "Process analyses" – a practical way to identify, understand and design ways to work in the organisation.

Content

In the same way as modern management control is highly related to a process/activity perspective this course is heavily connected to the organisational perspective. For example, in a practical exercise we identify and analyse an actual process in an organisational setting. In lectures and seminars the student gets a possibility to gain insights in to current practices in the area of management control and IT.

Instruction

The course is given in English. The in-class teaching consists of lectures and seminars.

Assessment

Grades will be given in accordance with the Swedish grading system and, for international students, the ECTS grading system. The following grades will be used: VG (passed with distinction), which corresponds to A or B in the ECTS grading system, G (passed), which corresponds to C, D or E, and U (failed) which corresponds to the ECTS grade F.

Course examination includes a written individual examination, equivalent to 4.5 ECTS credits, and a group based seminar paper, equivalent to 3 ECTS credits. To receive the final course grade G, the grade G is required for both the exam and the seminar paper. To receive the final course grade VG, the grade VG is required for the written individual examination and the grade G is required for the seminar paper

In addition, any remaining assignments and supplements must be completed and handed in at least within two weeks after the end of the course otherwise this part of the examination (all assignments included) has to be redone the following semester, provided there is space in the course.
