The course is offered within the Master's program on International Humanitarian Action 90 ECTS credits.

The course plan was agreed by the Dean of the Faculty of Theology on 2007-12-17

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of the module aim at to give students an opportunity to participate in as many aspects as possible of work in organisations involved in international humanitarian action. The students are expected to be trained in understanding and in reacting to different problems emerging in international humanitarian work as well as in developing strategies to find solutions in different challenges faced by humanitarian action organisations. After the course the students are expected to have:

- Capacity to see connections between theory and praxis and implement theoretical knowledge

- Capacity to develop interdisciplinary understanding and comprehensive analysis of emergency situation

- Ability to bridge the gap between theory and praxis

- Capacity to work in accordance with the demands of the HA workfield

- Ability to reflect upon one's own ambitions and roles in relation to the HA workfield

- Capacity to work as a member of a multicultural team reflecting upon one's own cultural values (incl. the scientific ones)

- Capacity to organise and plan humanitarian relief operations

- Awareness of the potential impact of humanitarian action on the life of the beneficiaries.

Content

Students are offered an opportunity to do an internship in a national or international governmental or non-governmental organisation related to the field of International Humanitarian Action.

The Internship is carried out in Sweden or abroad. As an alternative to the Internship a student can undertake a literature study in connection to the field of international humanitarian action. The examiner will decide upon the design of this alternative, including a reading list.

Assessment

A report of the Internship is presented as a 3-4-page paper, which should also include a comment from the student's supervisor at the organisation where the Internship has been conducted.

Grade: G (pass) as well as in ECTS grades.

Other regulations

The Internship course is only available to students admitted to the NOHA programme. The places for Internships are selected in consultation with the students. Before entering the period of Internship the student has to have the place confirmed by the programme.

Transitional provisions

Members of a course regulated by a former version of this course plan have the possibility to be examined in accordance with that course plan within two years after the closure of the course. If there are particular reasons, such an examination can take place also later on. Normally no instruction in accordance with former versions of the course plan is given.
