Learning outcomes

After finishing the course the student is supposed to be able to

  • give an overview of modern experimental methods in materials physics
  • describe the choices for different instrumentation and experimental probes
  • evaluate different experimental techniques as tools for solution of problems
  • analyse experimental methods with respect to sensitivity and accuracy for different measurements

Content

Experimental methods are at the centre of developments in materials physics. They are used to determine structure and properties of materials (both existing and newly developed) and how these are inter-related and tested against theoretical concepts and ideas. The course will provide an understanding of modern methods and how these are chosen for particular tasks by evaluation of sensitivity, accuracy, precision etc. Examples of particular techniques related to structure determination, electromagnetism and mechanical properties will be described in lectures and illustrated in practical sessions. These methods will cover atomic, nanoscale and macroscopic phenomena.

Instruction

Lectures and laboratory work. Self study and group work with student lead presentations will provide depth of study in particular areas. Chapters from various books and review articles will be used.

Assessment

Projects and seminar presentations.
