Required previous knowledge is decided by the Committee for Undergraduate Medical Education.

Aims

The objectives of the present course may be summarised as follows: After satisfactory completion of the course the student should be able to recognise, diagnose and treat patients suffering from the most commonly occurring domestic and nosocomial infectious diseases in this country, as well as some less frequent although serious infections. Further, the student should have acquired enough knowledge regarding other less frequent domestic infections, as well as the most important tropical infections that may be imported to this country, in order to be able to correctly refer such cases to specialists. The student should also have gained insight into global infectious diseases with emphasis on preventive measures.

Content

Training is provided within the following areas:

The epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of domestic and nosocomial infections in the immunocompetent individual.

Infections in the immunocompromised host.

The epidemiology and prophylaxis of tuberculosis.

Immunisations and immunisation techniques.

Strategies and ecological effects of antimicrobial chemotherapy.

Instruction

The infectious disease training includes lectures, patient demonstrations, case seminars, both supervised and unsupervised, taking of patients? histories, examinations of patients on wards and in the out-patient department, participation in rounds, and file reviews in small groups.

Assessment

In order for the course in infectious diseases to be considered passed, it is required that the student has satisfactorily fulfiled the requirements regarding individual and group activities on the ward and in the out-patient department according to information and hand-outs distributed at the start of the course.

A written examination takes place at the end of each course. For the student to be allowed to enter the examination, it is required that the course has been completed satisfactorily.
