The course is offered within the Master's Programme in International Humanitarian Action 120 ECTS credits.

Entry requirements

The course is only available to students admitted to the NOHA programme.

25 credits within the Programme in International Humanitarian Action.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of the module aim at to give students an opportunity to participate in as many aspects as possible of work in organisations involved in international humanitarian action. The students are expected to be trained in understanding and reacting to different problems emerging in international humanitarian work as well as in developing strategies to find solutions in different challenges faced by humanitarian action organisations. The student is expected to have acquired the following competences after a successful completion of the internship:

• a capacity to work with the specific character and demands of the humanitarian field
• an ability to relate theoretical knowledge to various duties in an humanitarian action organisation
• an ability to self-reflect upon one’s own ambitions, abilities and roles in relation to the humanitarian field
• a capacity to work satisfactory as a member of a intercultural humanitarian action team

Content

Students are offered an opportunity to do an internship in a national or international governmental or non-governmental organisation related to the field of International Humanitarian Action.

Students must sign an internship agreement with the university and the organisation before the start of the internship. The Internship is carried out in Sweden or abroad.

As an alternative to the Internship a student can undertake a literature study in connection to the field of international humanitarian action. The examiner will decide upon the design of this alternative, including a reading list.

Assessment

A report of at least 4000 words of the internship is presented in an academic and analytical style. A signed letter from the student’s supervisor at the organisation where the Internship has been conducted must be presented.

Grade: VG, G or U (Pass with Distinction, Pass or Fail) as well as ECTS grades.

Other regulations

The Internship course is only available to students admitted to the NOHA program. The places for Internships are selected in consultation with the students. Before entering the period of Internship the student has to have the place confirmed by the program. The internship can be recognised if the student has a long documented working experience from the HA field, or can prove activities similar to an internship in HA. The director of the NOHA program will decide if the student fulfils the requirements for recognition. The student can also choose to make a written assignment instead of internship. The paper must be at least 7500 words and treat a subject relevant for humanitarian action.

Transitional provisions

Members of a course regulated by a former version of this course plan have the possibility to be examined in accordance with that course plan within two years after the closure of the course. If there are particular reasons, such an examination can take place also later on. Normally no instruction in accordance with former versions of the course plan is given.
