Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Transform equations from the time-space domain to the wavenumber-frequency domain.
- Recite Snell’s law and apply it to solving ray tracing problems.
- Derive the eikonal equation and describe how it is used in seismic migration.
- Give an account of the basic principles of reflection seismic data acquisition and processing.
- Apply processing steps to seismic data using MATLAB and make changes in the computer code.
- Explain the concept and apply the different types of migration techniques (Kirchhoff migration, downward continuation, phase shift migration).
Content
Basics of reflection seismics, Fourier transform, the wave equation, ray theory, migration, dip moveout (DMO), Radon transforms, numerical methods, reflection and transmission of elastic waves, pre-stack migration.
Instruction
Lectures, homework, problem solving and computer exercises
Assessment
Written examination (4 credits) and homework assignments (1 credit).
