Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university, and at least 7.5 credits in GIS.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

• account for and contribute to current theory and method development for landscape analysis and GIS in archeology and ancient history,
• formulate a scientific issue that is suitable for a modern GIS analysis,
• apply the technical skills required to independently conduct a research project using GIS,
• based on their questions and technical skills, evaluate and compare different types of data, sources and information systems,
• work with a project work, individually or in pairs,
• present a project work in speech, writing and visually.

Content

The course provides knowledge and skills in landscape analysis and working with GIS (Geographic Information Systems), as well as in the use of GIS to analyse issues in archaeology and ancient history, and to use GIS to make spatial analyses. Landscape, methodology, theory, analysis, interpretation, source criticism, raster and vector data are some of the concepts covered in the course.

Instruction

Instruction consists of lectures, supervised exercises in the GIS lab and tutoring individually and in groups. Instruction is given in English.

Assessment

Examination is in the form of completed exercises with exercise reports, oral presentation and writing of a scientifically designed article. Examination will be in English or in Swedish.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

Limitations: The course replaces Landscape Archaeology 15 credits, 5AR753, and may not be included in the same degree.
