Entry requirements

60 credits in science/engineering including Inorganic Chemistry I, 10 credits, or Physical Chemistry, 10 credits, or Basic Materials Chemistry, 5 credits.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• describe the principles concerning solid state structures
• describe specific crystal structures by applying basic crystallographic concepts
• give an account of the generation of X-ray radiation and its effects of on matter
• describe the experimental use of the diffraction phenomenon
• use powder diffraction data for characterising cubic substances
• relate diffraction intensities mathematically to structural parameters and derive extinction conditions
• use crystallographic data for a validated phase analysis
• analyse thermograms and phase diagrams in known systems

Content

Fundamentals regarding the solid state, including selected structural examples. Theoretical and practical crystallography. Unary and binary phase diagrams. X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and introduction to other characterisation techniques

Instruction

Lectures, tutorials and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examination (4 credits). The laboratory course corresponds to 1 credit.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives

This course cannot be counted towards the completion of a degree program together with 1KB209 Solid state chemistry.
