Entry requirements
Bachelor degree of at least 180 credits, including 70 credits in physics, chemistry, material science and/or materials engineering and 20 credits in mathematics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. (A Swedish Bachelor's degree fulfils the requirement in English.)
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- account for current trends in materials engineering,
- account for common concepts, categories and theories in materials engineering,
- identify categories of materials for different applications based on structure, physical and chemical properties,
- assess new knowledge by critically using literature and databases within science and technology,
- conduct a literature study within materials engineering and present the results in a scientific way,
- summarise and present research reports or scientific articles in a way that makes them accessible to a non-expert audience,
- describe some technological fields specifically targeted by the programme,
- use the computer systems required in the initial courses of the programme, as well as know and apply the corresponding regulations and rules for use of the University IT systems.
Content
Lectures and seminars on topics including practical aspects of studying at Uppsala University, the contents of the program, report writing, searching literature databases, ethics and plagiarism. Guest lectures by experts in various fields of materials engineering on current trends in research in their field. Individual literature study on a topic in materials engineering, resulting in a written report and an oral presentation.
Instruction
Lectures and seminars with student presentations. Individual literature study supervised by a teacher or researcher.
Assessment
Active participation in seminars. Oral and written presentations of the literature study. Written assignments.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
