Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain basic relationships between structure and properties for all classes of materials,
  • make qualitative comparisons between materials,
  • describe the underlying mechanisms for hardening of metals,
  • describe the different test methods of materials,
  • describe the requirements for implantable materials,
  • describe the most commonly used polymers, ceramics and metals as biomaterials.

Content

Material structure and deformation mechanisms. Relationship between atomic bonds, microstructure and macroscopic properties. Materials testing. Properties of engineering materials within all classes of materials. Materials for replacement or repair of human organs. The course could be given in English.

Instruction

Lectures, exercise classes, laboratory sessions and supervision of project assignments.

Assessment

Written exam (3 credits). Oral and written presentation of laboratory work and project assignments (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
