Entry requirements

Participation in 30 credits in chemistry, of which 15 credits completed including at least 5 credits from General Chemistry, Chemical Principles I, Basic Chemistry or The Basic Principles of Chemistry. In addition, participation in Linear Algebra I.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • use theories from mechanics, electrostatics and wave mechanics, alone and in combination, to reason about system properties
  • solve problems with the aid of physical models and reflect on the applicability of these models
  • discuss connections between macroscopically observable and molecular properties of chemical systems, as well as basic physical principles behind relevant chemical analysis methods
  • plan, execute and evaluate an experimental project that tests basic theories in classical physics

Content

Mechanics: Newton's equations, work, energy, equilibrium structures, reaction diagrams, linear momentum, rotational motion, angular momentum,. Electrostatics: Coulomb's law, electric field strength and potential, electric dipole, polarisation, dielectric effects, electrostatic energy. Periodic motion: Vibrations, basic wave mechanics, diffraction, interference.

Instruction

Lectures, problem solving sessions, seminars and laboratory work with oral student presentations.

Assessment

Written tests are organised at the end of the course (4 credits). The laboratory(1 credit).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
