120 credits in science/engineering including 10 credits in electronics and 15 credits in mathematics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student shall be able to:

  • analyze physical phenomena and calculate physical quantities in semiconductors,
  • evaluate transport mechanisms in semiconductors,
  • model diodes and transistors in new, realistic cases,
  • analyze I-V and C-V characteristics of semiconductor components such as diodes and transistors,
  • apply diodes and transistors in simple circuits,
  • simulate and analyze electronic circuits using software.

Content

Fixed and moving charges and doping. Generation and recombination of charge carriers. The theory of charge transport in semiconductors. the pn junction and the metal-semiconductor junction. The MOS capacitor. The MOS transistor. Bipolar junction transistor. Piezoelectricity, the Peltier and Seebeck effect, solar cells.

Instruction

Lectures, problem solving in groups. Laboratory work. Lectures, group work and laboratory work will be done using the online platform.

Assessment

Laboratory report (1 credit), written quizes (2 credits), written examination (2 credits).

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions to the specified examination method and allow a student to be examined in a different way. Special reasons can e.g. be notified of special educational support from the university's coordinator for students with disabilities.
