Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, and Introduction to Humanitarian Action, 5 credits, Anthropology and Intercultural Aspects of Humanitarian Action, 5 credits, Legal Dimensions of Humanitarian Action, 5 credits, World Politics and Humanitarian Action, 5 credits, Public Health in Humanitarian Action, 5 credits, Management, 5 credits, and Conflict and Peacebuilding, 15 credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

The course aims to give students the opportunity to participate in the work of organizations operating in the field of international humanitarian work. Students are expected to be trained to understand and respond to various challenges that arise in humanitarian work, as well as develop strategies to find solutions to the challenges.

After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:

• with a high degree of independence ability to identify and formulate problems concerning concrete challenges affecting international humanitarian work,
• with a high degree of independence ability to analyze the practice of different businesses and apply a humanitarian perspective in the analysis,
• skill to identify possible obstacles to the satisfaction of humanitarian needs within and through the operation,
• ability to independently formulate and argue for a position regarding how the work with humanitarian work can be strengthened in the current environment,
• show cooperation skills,
• the ability to communicate well with various stakeholders.

Content

The course is carried out as a work placement with relevance to the program in which the course is included.

Examples of suitable practice can be workplaces within humanitarian organizations, aid organizations, actors in civil society and relevant authorities. The internship must be able to offer varied tasks at different levels.

The purpose of the internship is to use the skills in the form of problem formulation, data collection, analysis and presentation that the intern has acquired during the theoretical training at a workplace.

The internship must include tasks in which the student can use theoretical knowledge and skills acquired within the framework of the Masters programme in Humanitarian Action and Conflicts. The student gets the opportunity to develop the ability to work both independently and together with others. During the internship, the student forms an idea of ​​what the education can lead to and gets opportunities to build a personal contact network.

The internship gives the student the opportunity to develop the ability to speak and write the Swedish language. When doing an internship abroad, the intern also gets the opportunity to practice the ability to communicate in another language and gain experience of living and working in a foreign environment.

Instruction

The primary teaching element during the internship is the work at the internship. The internship provider assigns a supervisor to the student. Regularly recurring and planned supervision sessions are carried out at the internship site. Attendance is mandatory during the working hours that prevail at the full-time internship. Within the framework of the course, the trainee is entitled to five days to work on the written report and evaluation.

Assessment

The student writes an academic and analytical report on the internship of at least 4,000 words. The student's supervisor in the organization must also send in a completed evaluation form.

Everything to be assessed must be written in English.

Grade: failing (F), sufficient (E), satisfactory (D), good (C), very good (B) and excellent (A) respectively.

If there are special reasons, the examiner may make exceptions to the specified examination method and allow a student to be examined in a different way. Special reasons can e.g. be notified of special educational support from the university's coordinator for students with disabilities.

Other regulations

The university cannot guarantee an internship with a humanitarian actor. The student is responsible for finding a relevant internship organization. Before the student begins the internship, it must be approved by the university and an agreement signed. Internships that include a stay in an area that the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against are not accepted.

Transitional provisions

If the course ends or undergoes major changes, three examination opportunities are given according to this syllabus during three semesters. If there are special reasons, such examination can also take place later.
