Entry requirements

120 credits, of which 90 credits in technology and 20 credits in mathematics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • explain the fundamental principles and applications of simulation and optimisation in the context of logistics and production systems,
  • analyse the impact of variability, system dynamics, and performance metrics on the operation and efficiency of logistics and production systems,
  • develop and evaluate conceptual models to represent and analyse logistics and production systems,
  • apply statistical and probabilistic methods to model, analyse, and evaluate input data for simulation and optimisation,
  • design and conduct simulation-based experiments, 
  • use appropriate tools and methods to assess system performance and explore optimisation strategies,
  • identify, evaluate, and apply optimisation strategies to address trade-offs and improve outcomes in logistics and production system.

Content

Simulation and optimisation techniques for logistics and production systems, including event-driven simulation and performance analysis. Applications of statistical methods to model system inputs, evaluation of system performance, and optimisation of logistics and production processes using simulation-based optimisation tools. Examples of optimisation with respect to different types of goals, including sustainability-related. Various optimisation strategies, including metaheuristic algorithms.

Assessment

Laboratory sessions, written assignments, written exam.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
