Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) including 90 credits in sociology.

Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Learning outcomes

Having undertaken the course, the students will be able to:

* Identity relevant research studies in order to frame and discuss a demarcated sociological area of interest (e.g. a phenomenon or a question);

* Synthesize and thematize relevant research methodological applications and key findings;

* compare and critically evaluate research, pertaining to relevance, perspective and quality;

* identify and articulate key issues, research problems and potential research gaps within the area of interest;

* independently write a literature review within the given time-frame of the course;

* communicate, in written form and orally, the state of research within the area of interest.

Content

The course aims to train the skills needed for writing a literature review within a defined sociological problem area, of relevance to the upcoming master's thesis. This means independently identifying, processing, critically reviewing and systematizing published research, as well as communicating the outcome of this review in a well-structured written report.

Instruction

Teaching is undertaken through lectures, seminars and independent study.

Assessment

Assessment is based on:

* seminar participation;

* a course paper comprised of an academic literature review;

* an oral presentation of the main results of the literature review.

Grades: Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G), Fail (U).

Where special circumstances apply, exceptions to the standard assessment methods may allow the student to be assessed through alternative methods. Such special circumstances may be notification of special educational support needs from the relevant University Coordinator.

Uppsala University takes academic fraud and plagiarism seriously and takes action against students suspected of involvement in fraud and / or plagiarism. Disciplinary measures consist in formal warnings and suspension from study for specified time periods.
