2D Game Programming with C++, 7.5 credits (5SD817), and Linear Algebra, Trigonometry and Geometry, 7.5 credits (5SD901)

Learning outcomes

In terms of knowledge and comprehension, after completing the course the student should be able to

  • describe a selection of fundamental game architectural options for larger game worlds and their implementation challenges
  • explain strategies for managing game entities in larger-scale games.

In terms of skill and ability, after completing the course the student should be able to:

  • develop a camera system with basic culling and object sorting capabilities
  • build an entity management system that handles game objects and their relationships
  • implement collision detection and response systems.

In terms of evaluation and analysis, after completing the course the student should be able to:

  • motivate the selection of data structures and specific C++-features in the implementation of a larger game.

Content

This course provides students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to implement core systems for larger scale game worlds using C++. Students will learn about spatial partitioning, camera systems, and entity management while gaining hands-on experience in selecting and applying appropriate C++ patterns for game development. The course will touch on concepts relevant to both 2D and 3D game development, supporting a broader understanding of game architecture.

Instruction

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops, and laboratory work.

Assessment

Examination will be in the forms of hand-in assignments, oral examination and quizzes.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.
